Featuring Exbucklandia populnea plants for sale this week

The surprisingly hardy Exbucklandia populnea - not ordinary garden centre fare

Very curious new growth on the exbucklandia showing throughout much of the year
Last week Curculigo recurvata, this week Exbucklandia populnea. This fast growing evergreen tree from China appears to show a remarkably high degree of hardiness to cold (that is, New Zealand cold standards) and its new leaves are very curious, nearly rigid, waxy discs. We have never seen a mature exbucklandia (though Glyn Church tells us he has on overseas trips and they are very handsome) – it hasn’t been in this country long enough yet to reach maturity. It certainly gives a handsome, tropical look suitable for climates where gardeners are irrespressibly optimistic and too cold for the usual options. We are selling exbucklandias priced from $30 to $40 and you are not likely to find them on offer elsewhere. Nor indeed are you likely to find the white Luculia Fragrant Pearl elsewhere, shown in the foreground of the photo.
Plant sales have to be collected from the nursery. Despite repeated requests, I am afraid we do not courier plants (if it was easy, we would, but it is not). However, we have plenty of space out the back so are quite happy to hold pre-paid orders until you can find somebody coming this way to collect on your behalf. We are now open for plant sales on Fridays and Saturdays each week. Most of what we have available is listed under Plant Sales on this site, though there are always extra bits and pieces.
